Ruth Ibegbuna’s Fellowship research is drawn from five young people who have been a part of RECLAIM. Her research has now grown into a published book, 'On Youth.'
RECLAIM is a charity founded by Ruth in 2007; it has grown since then and become widely recognised as a platform for working class young people. The five young people featured have faced a plethora of struggles and challenges, they speak of what motivates them to strive and look beyond their pasts.
Their stories cover challenges with mental health, sexuality and dealing with homophobia, racial issues of stereotypes, the isolation of different cultures and gendered stereotypes. In reading their stories you journey with them from insight to insight, their narratives take place against a backdrop of the wider picture of inequality within society; in recent times these divisions have become sharper than ever.
On Youth includes a foreword by Owen Jones and a recap on the statistics that paint a broader picture of the stark circumstances working class young people inherit. It is for the readers to listen to these young people who are driven to see change, and be a part of that drive.
