Exploring the future of medical research

Exploring the future of medical research

By Stuart Griffiths , February 2016

Asia setting the research agenda, Apple competing with Google to provide health care, the end of phase III clinical trials, and the use of real world patient data collected from mobile technology... thinking about the future can throw up some interesting ideas!

As part of his Fellowship, Stuart Griffiths set out to explore the future of UK medical research. Despite the fact that it can take decades to create new therapies, Stuart believes that not enough time is spent considering what the world will be like when those therapies are ready for clinical use. With this in mind, he decided to run a simplified Foresight project and to look into the future of UK medical research all the way up to the year 2035.

Discussing his research, Stuart said, ‘The work generated many insights into strategic and financial issues which can act as discussion starters for those interested in the future of health, healthcare and medical research.’

With the support of Breast Cancer Now, Stuart created a guide to help those wishing to run their own Foresight project with his process and insights as an example. You can download it here.
