Lessons From Pirates
By Ivo Gormley , January 2014
What the German Pirate Party can tell us about the future of governance for social purpose organisations
Ivo Gormley's research explores the views of key figures from within the German Pirate Party during the run up to the 2013 election and attempts to judge what conclusions can be drawn from its experimentations with governance for social purpose organisations.
Specifically Ivo asks;
- What are the limitations and advantages of the governance-as-platform system of the German Pirate Party?
- To what extent is the open governance system of the Party a factor in its success and failure?
- To what extent are the Party’s governance structures and principles applicable to other organisations?
This research seeks to spark discussion about whether social sector organisations’ governance systems are fit for purpose and the extent to which they reflect and are consistent with their charitable mission.
