Newly Arrived South Asian Muslim Women in the UK

Newly Arrived South Asian Muslim Women in the UK

By Jitka Markova , May 2013

Aspirations for Social Inclusion

Jitka Markova published her research which examines the experiences of South Asian Muslim women arriving in the UK. The work is designed to inform the services the UK offers these women to help support their integration into local communities.

Jitka found that ESOL teachers are key figures, providing cultural and practical support for these migrant women; the research recommends more training and funding be invested in the ESOL teachers’ role. The research also highlights the critical role of the mother-in-law and recommends the extended family be more actively involved in the integration process.
