Investigating Systems Thinking for Community Groups

Investigating Systems Thinking for Community Groups

By Kate Swade , January 2015

2013 Fellow Kate Swade's professional experience is broadly in community development, particularly around land & property, and always with groups of people. She has been working for almost 10 years with groups of neighbours, activists or small not-for-private-profit organisations who  want take more control of land or buildings in their areas. At Shared Assets she works with communities who are managing woodlands, waterways, parks and green spaces in sustainable and productive ways.

As she began to explore 'systems thinking,' she realised that some of these theories and approaches may be especially useful for community groups that are trying to make change.

This is a report of and reflection on Kate's adventures in systems thinking over the course of her Fellowship, and a personal exploration of systems thinking from a community development practitioner’s perspective.
