What more can we do to support ex-Services personnel?
By Jane Rowley , February 2016
Dr Jane Rowley’s research was inspired by her work on trauma, identity and recovery. During her specialist fellowship with the Forces in Mind Trust she investigated ways to support people in transition from military service to civilian life. This report looks at the inclusive framework for Post Traumatic Growth, which is psychological growth after a traumatic experience, and Jane’s learning is charted within this process.
Her research considers how we can all become Expert Companions to people who need our help. It particularly focuses on those who have undertaken military service, however the key tasks of an Expert Companion have resonance across the social sector for anyone working to support people.
Jane commented, “My research shows that we can find and effectively use different methods to help those in transition move forward. We can support people to find new meaning in their lives after trauma and aid them to recognise that distress can co-exist with growth”.
