The Business of Philanthropy Advising: How far should we go?

By Cathy Elliott , February 2015

As a leader in the UK’s philanthropy field, 2013 Clore Social Fellow Cathy Elliott produced her research report, The Business of Philanthropy Advising, to provide recommendations to Community Foundations in the UK and Canada in developing their philanthropy advising offer to community philanthropists.

The research report is a summary of work over a two year period, debating, consulting and developing a Community Foundation’s philanthropy advising offer with senior Community Foundation practitioners in the UK and Canada. It includes the results of consultations with around 20 senior UK practitioners in summer 2013 and autumn 2014 that tracked their beliefs, wishes and best practice in Community Foundation philanthropy advising as well as the perceived competitors in the field.

It was supported by live findings shared at the national Community Foundation conferences in the UK and Canada in 2013 and the UK Community Foundations Symposium in 2014.

The report aims to complement the Philanthropy Advising Framework, launched in 2015, for Community Foundations in the UK, developed by Community Foundation practitioners, including a Steering Group Cathy has chaired since 2013, and CASS Business School via consultancy research.
