Thomas is Head of Humanitarian at CARE International UK. This team includes technical specialists in humanitarian practice, including experts in emergency shelter, cash programmes, resilience, gender and protection. It both provides leadership for the CARE federation on these technical areas, and supports humanitarian programmes worldwide. As well as leading this team Tom is part of the global CARE Federation’s humanitarian leadership.
Tom is a chartered structural engineer who has worked both in the private sector as an engineering consultant, and the NGO sector as a humanitarian shelter specialist. He has been involved in a number of emergency responses around the world. He is also a founding member and a trustee of Engineers Without Borders UK, and is a trustee of the Happold Foundation. He chairs the Humanitarian and International Development Panel of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
Tom has a strong interest in safe and dignified housing and in gender equality, and hopes that being a Clore Social Fellow will help him better enable these areas in his work with CARE and the other organisations he supports.
