How has this period of your Fellowship been?

This quarter I have spent a lot of time helping the school which I helped set up. It lost a key appointment and faced a number of serious issues which have needed some hands on input from myself and other founders. This has taken a lot of my time and focus.

What has been your greatest challenge? 

Balancing all my commitments and deciding how best to manage the situation at the school. The needs of the school very much test the limits of our governance structure and this needs a lot of work to get it right. Trying to navigate through this against the backdrop of finishing my Clore Social Fellowship and also deciding on my next career move has been challenging.

How else has your leadership been having an impact on those you work with? 

I think it has had the greatest impact in helping the school and other founders work their way through the current situation we find ourselves in. I have now seen first hand what a lack of good leadership can do to an organisations culture and morale and have been involved with turning this around. To that effect I feel I have a much stronger understanding of what motivates(and demotivates) people and how to get people behind a vision. 

In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?

Going back to work with the same colleagues after having taken time out feels very different. I feel clearer about why I am doing things and what my motivation is and in a sense I am returning on an equal footing. I feel I am driven now more about what I want to do rather than what is needed for the organization.

 What have you learnt so far during the Fellowship programme?

I’ve learnt a lot more about my own working style and what drives me, my thoughts at the start of the programme about what I wanted to be were idealized and not realistic. I am now happier not trying to be everything to everyone and to focus on what I can do well and work towards that.

What opportunities/support/skills/inspiration/lessons have you received from other Fellows?

Action Learning Sets have been very useful and thought provoking. I really appreciate the space they provide and find myself energized after them. A useful learning in a set was around what we feel we should be doing in contrast to what we want to be doing. I find myself appreciating Susan Murrays blunt observations and Sam Andersons effortless calm.

How would you describe the CSLP experience so far? 

It’s the experience you need to prepare you for the next stage of your career.
