Type of Fellowship: General
Year of Fellowship: 2011
Update October 2012
The purpose of my research project is to work with a small number of non-profits delivering alternative provision in partnership with schools and councils. The type of services organisations offer will vary, as will the needs of the young people they work with. My aim is for the sector to think collectively about what success looks like for the young people accessing this provision, what range of outcomes young people and funders can expect and what the sector should expect of itself.
The research is in three stages including interviews with staff from up to 12 organisations, already some way on their internal development of measuring outcomes and impact, followed by a workshop for all research participants to consider what key measurements and outcomes should be used in measuring success and defining good alternative provision. The final stage will be a presentation, case studies and recommendations to an invited audience.
As part of my training and development I am going to India to take part in a week long leadership challenge alongside leaders from different sectors in the UK and India. The opportunity to explore a common pressing political, social and economic issue will, I hope, provide me with access to a unique learning opportunity to deepen my understanding of the change process through collaboration with others.
Over the summer I continued to develop my network and also attended an introduction to journalism course, which taught me more about how to construct, tell and promote a story that has resonance across a range of media and outside an immediate interest group. Working with a seasoned journalist and others from a range of backgrounds provided me with insight into another tool to highlight and promote issues to different audiences.
I’ve also started working with my mentor on next steps with a view to life post-Fellowship. This has inevitably led me to objectively review my progress to date, a bitter-sweet exercise at this point. On the one hand it is satisfying to consider what I’ve learned and achieved so far, on the other hand it points to the near end of my formal Clore journey. It has been an incredible learning and development process and one which will provide me with the skills, focus and purpose for my next role.
