Update October 2012
Another busy three months, which have seen the announcement of the merger discussions between Daycare Trust and Family and Parenting Institute. These discussions have been time-consuming and intensive, and the support provided to me through the Clore programme has been invaluable.
In particular, monthly sessions with my coach Bill Best have allowed me the space and access to expertise to deal with issues as wide-ranging as personal feelings about the merger, managing communications with staff at a time of considerable uncertainty and my approach to discussions at staff and trustee level. These discussions with Bill have been supplemented by regular contact with my mentor Martin Narey who has given me the benefit of his experience in dealing with mergers and negotiations. He has also been extremely valuable in helping me to consider my career direction in a more strategic way, and has started to introduce me to his networks.
The Roffey Park residential in July came at a particular intense period in the merger discussions, and I particularly welcomed the chance to step back, catch up with the full cohort for the first time since January, and reflect on leadership issues more broadly. I found the sessions with Kate Sayer particularly helpful, with her case study approach facilitating stimulating discussion and debate within our breakout group. The Kate Stanley presentation on the use of film for social purposes also encouraged me to make much more use of Daycare Trust’s Parent Champions film to influence policymakers – and this is proving effective, with interest shown from the Scottish government in particular after seeing the film.
The Action Learning sets have continued, and I continue to find these one of the highlights of the Fellowship. We have a very good group of Fellows, with different backgrounds and experiences – and I always leave the sessions with a number of insights and areas for reflection. The research is getting under way – a couple of meetings have been held with New Economics Foundation to discuss the methodology, and the fieldwork will begin in the next few weeks.
