Andy Shipley

Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB)

Andy Shipley is a Trustee of Bucksvision, formally Buckinghamshire Association for the Blind (which runs the county rehabilitation service and campaigns for the interests of visually impaired people), where he was Chair between 2008 and 2011.  He is also a member of the Policy council of the Town and Country Planning Association. 

As National Lifetime Homes Coordinator with Habinteg Housing Association between 2009 and 2012, Andy advised the government and house building industry on the design and construction of homes and neighbourhoods to ensure they are accessible and adaptable to respond to the changing needs of our diverse society. 

Between 2000 and 2007, Andy was with the Disability Rights Commission, leading it’s work on policy and legislation effecting the planning and design of the built environment. Following this he was seconded to the Department for Communities and Local government, to advise on its development of the housing strategy for an ageing society; ‘Lifetime Homes, Lifetime Neighbourhoods’. 

In 2006 Andy was appointed as Commissioner on the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012. On which he advises and evaluates the Olympic delivery bodies’ performance in meeting their commitments to make London 2012 the most accessible and inclusive games ever.

He has been a member of the Government Building Regulations Advisory Committee since 2007 and in that capacity chaired the Government’s 2008-2009 review of accessible housing. He is a member of the British Standards Institution committees on designing buildings and approaches to meet the needs of disabled people, and sustainable communities respectively.
