Type of Fellowship: General
Year of Fellowship: 2011
Update April 2012
The combination of Malaysian sun, good food and close friends meant my start to 2012 fully embraced the mantra of ‘looking after yourself’. As a result of my holiday, I returned to the UK re-invigorated and ready to make the most of the final year of my Clore Social Fellowship.
I arrived at Social Finance, to start my secondment as a Social Impact Bond Advisor, on 12 March. The focus of my role is children and families, and initially I have been concentrating on the operations planning and outcome metrics for a Social Impact Bond for children on the edge of care. The secondment has been a real culture shock; I’ve moved from The Children’s Society, a 130 year old national organisation, to a much smaller growing organisation where I have no staff management, there are no children and I have only one programme of work to focus on.
The secondment has been great in terms of taking me out of my comfort zone, making me think differently and developing my learning. I will be at Social Finance for four days a week until 12 June and my additional day will be focused on other Clore commitments, in particular, reflecting on and progressing my research.
This quarter I have re-established my coaching which will be critical in helping me make the most of the year. The focus of my sessions to date have been around preparing me for my secondment and identifying some key personal development targets that I want to progress by the end of the year.
I have also firmed up my training plan, and my key priorities focus on sector funding, using evidence, communication and careers management. I have identified appropriate courses, shadowing opportunities and other learning opportunities and now in the process of organising them. I have also been very lucky as Benita Refson, CEO of Place2b has agreed to mentor me through my final year of Clore.
Lastly I have continued to gain immensely from my cohort of Fellows; we continue to meet regularly, sharing our learning, support, networks and ideas. All in all, 2012 will be a year of immense learning and one which I am already very much enjoying.
