Where are all the social leaders outside of London?
Posted on March 17, 2014
Is that a reasonable question? Or am I being provocative? I know there are thousands of social leaders outside London and the South East, people who have the potential to (and already) lead social change in new and innovative ways. But where are you all?
As a West Yorkshire girl who migrated to London several years ago, I feel strongly about this.
Facts are facts – the social sector has a large base in the South East (32%), and particularly London. Our Fellows reflect our application pool – around 50% of our Fellows are from London and the South East, as are 50% of our applicants. As a Programme we’ve always been UK-wide but, given our core belief in diversity, we want to do better – to ensure we live out our values and reflect the sector we’re in. So, we need more leaders from the regions and nations outside the capital city to apply to become a Clore Social Fellow.
To do this we know we need to get the word out there louder and more clearly, and we’ve already done a bit of ground work, holding sessions for potential sessions outside London each year. (In Edinburgh, Gateshead and Manchester in 2015). In the process we’ve met some interesting people with some great experience who asked challenging questions.
Although our HQ is in London, the Fellowships themselves are not. We hold our residentials in locations around the country, from Edinburgh to Poole. All travel costs for Fellows are covered (including flights for those who need them). Fellows are allocated to Action Learning Sets based on their location and ease of access. We reach out to coaches and mentors across the UK. And your individual training budget is yours to spend how you want, and where you want. So location shouldn’t be a barrier to you applying.
In 2015 and 2016 we’re working in partnership with Garfield Weston Foundation to fund a Fellow specifically based in the North East – a fantastic well needed investment.
How you can help
Despite our wholesale effort to reach out, we also need your help. Are you from Kirklees, Scunthorpe, Hull, Aberystwyth, Strabane, Inverness, Exeter or any of the other areas we don't yet have Fellows? Are you someone with the ambition to lead social change? Do you know others who are?
In order to have social leaders outside of London we need people to put themselves forward and apply! So please help us spread the word and make sure leadership investment isn’t something that only happens for those in the South East.
Have your say!
