Why aren't enough UK Armed Forces personnel seeking help for mental health problems?

I’ve worked with the Armed Forces community for many years, both in military help-seeking research at the King’s Centre of Military Health Research and in healthcare policy at the Royal British Legion. I was fortunate enough last year to be a Forces in Mind Trust Fellow on Clore Social Leadership’s Fellowship Programme.

An area I care very deeply about is the mental health of our Armed Forces community. We live in a stressful world, there is no doubt.

Charities need to stop pretending they are transparent

Matt Stevenson-Dodd is the Chief Executive of Street League, UK’s leading sport for employment charity, and has been recently selected by The Guardian as one of the top charity CEO’s on social media. Matt is a guest speaker on the Clore6: Youth Sector Emerging Leaders Programme on 8 March.

The problem for charities with transparency is simple. Driven by a scarcity of funding, we feel compelled to tell ever more hard-hitting stories about the beneficiaries we serve rather than balancing this storytelling with hard facts about the actual impact we achieve (or don’t).

The five challenges of asking, 'how am I doing?'

Andreana Drencheva is a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at the University of Sheffield where she helps social entrepreneurs to develop entrepreneurial and leadership capabilities.

“How am I doing?” and “How can I do better?” are two simple, yet powerful questions for social leaders. Using these two questions to seek feedback from diverse individuals is a fundamental strategy for social leaders.

Leadership and the future of our 'civil society'

At Clore Social’s Leaders Now breakfast meeting at the House of St Barnabas this week, we were lucky enough to hear from Julia Unwin, former CEO of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the chair of the upcoming Inquiry into the future of Civil Society, a privately funded piece of research.

She started by reflecting on her work and her views on leadership which were refreshingly down to earth and simple.  She used wording from a primary school classroom she had found herself in the previous evening to pull together some ideas.

Is social investment serving the needs of social sector organisations?

Social investment is a subject that has been much talked about in recent years. There are some within the voluntary and community sectors with strong views about social investment, either for or against.  As someone who has spent almost a decade working in the realm of social investment, I am most definitely an advocate.  But recently I have found myself becoming quite frustrated with the social investment sector because I am not sure we are adequately serving those who have social impact at the heart of their mission – charities and social enterprises.

Social integration and 'British values': what's human about that?

At the end of his 2016 Reith Lectures, Kwame Anthony Appiah left us with this striking quotation. Written by a man who was ‘ a slave from Roman Africa, a Latin interpreter of Greek comedies and a writer from Classical Europe’,  the words attest to a profound appreciation of what it is to be human, and how our humanity, once acknowledged, transcends concepts of nationality, identity or status.

Specialist services ARE special & crucial for those in crisis

I have worked in world of ‘crisis support’ in various roles for 15 years. For me, crisis support is for people who feel they cannot cope or move forward without external help. The people I have worked with who are in crisis are often dealing with a multitude of issues they need support with such as rough sleeping, mental health needs, domestic violence and substance misuse.

The next big thing in preventing and tackling homelessness

Crisis and Glasgow Homelessness Network have announced their intention to create a new dedicated body that is sector-led (by homelessness specialists from charities, government, research bodies and others) to improve the lives of people affected by homelessness by instigating a shift in resources to evidence-based solutions. How do think tanks create change?

Last Autumn I left my job at one of England’s biggest think tanks. As I moved out of the think tank world, I began mulling over what difference, if any, I had made over the last seven years. Funders were increasingly asking us to demonstrate our impact, and so as part of my Clore Social Leadership fellowship I have conducted a short piece of research on this topic titled, Impact: an enquiry into how think tanks create change, interviewing some of the key people working with think tanks to explore exactly how they create change in the world.
