Update Spring 2013

How have the first 3 months of the Fellowship been for you?

I’ve found them both empowering and inspiring. It’s been a great three months – but much busier than I anticipated!

What’s been your greatest challenge?

Coming to grips with the huge amount of opportunities that are available. I’m getting a clearer idea of how I can use the next 15 months or so to develop myself, my leadership style and my career, but I can see that this will be more challenging than I anticipated.

What impact has your leadership been having?

On 27thFebruary I gave a talk at a breakfast meeting with Robert Francis QC, who recently conducted the inquiry into the failures at the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust.  I spoke from the point of view of a patient but I believe that being a Clore Social Fellow added weight to what I was saying.

In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?

The Fellowship has reminded me of the value of different working styles, and enabled me to meet people who work quite differently but ultimately share the same values and aspirations as me. That’s making me a better, more understanding leader, and one who is more able to foster debate and difference and get the best out of those situations.

Can you share an important lesson you’ve learnt?

The most important lesson that I’ve learned so far is that most people are much more open and helpful than I thought they would be. I’ve been really surprised (pleasantly!) at how willing various people – some of whom are in very senior positions – have been willing to meet with me.

How would you sum up your Clore Social Fellowship experience so far?

The CLSP is an amazing experience to explore the multitude of opportunities that are available but which we rarely have time to engage with.  I can’t think of another programme in this sector which is so flexible, open and supportive.  It does require a lot of discipline and self-direction but I’ve learned a huge amount in the short time I’ve been doing the Fellowship. I can’t wait to see what the rest of it brings.
