Type of Fellowship: Specialist
Year of Fellowship: 2011
The Pears Fellowship for an aspiring leader working in education, community development or welfare for the benefit of the Jewish community in the UK.
Update October 2012
As I near the end of my two years as a Clore Social Fellow, I am gradually easing out of the wonderful environment of learning and reflection that Clore creates and starting to put that learning into practice.
As my new organisation, the International Centre for Social Franchising, takes me further into innovative and uncharted territories, I am grateful for the grounding the Clore has given me in the basics. Working for GlaxoSmithKlien and a small social enterprise in the same week keeps you on your toes!
The Clore phrase that has become a mantra to so many of us, 'know yourself, be yourself, look after yourself' is a constant reminder of the valuable lessons we learned. As I write this, sniffling from a cold, I realise that I still have a lot to learn on the ‘look after yourself’ bit at least!
I have finished my research, a comparison between the Trussell Trust's Foodbank and McDonald's. It has been fascinating being inside a large successful multinational franchise and thinking about what the social sector can learn from them. The International Centre for Social Franchising, Social Enterprise UK and Natwest are putting on an event on 7 November 2012 to look at social franchising and I will be presenting my paper there.
My training budget is now long spent, but our introduction to the Action Learning set methodology in year one continues to help as we meet up every few months and self facilitate sessions. I am looking forward to the final write up of my Clore Social Leadership experience in the coming months and the final formal chance for reflection on a programme that has so dramatically transformed my working life and beyond. My hope is that this transformation will be applied to the increasing number of organisations that we are working with to help them replicate their successes to scale.
