Emily Georghiou is Local Influencing Adviser for Age UK, working to improve later life and make the UK a great place to grow older. She has developed the Age Action Alliance network - with Government, older people and cross sector organisations - to promote positive attitudes and practical solutions, previously providing UK Secretariat to AGE Platform Europe. She is active in her community and was Deputy Chair of Lambeth and Southwark Mind (2010-2015).
As a passionate advocate for equality, rights and civic empowerment and a champion of diversity, Emily has worked in a range of roles to promote social justice. From sorting MP's mailbags in her home constituency to working as a Parliamentary researcher and in campaigns and advisory roles to UK MPs (including an Education Minister) and an MEP, she joined Parliamentary Affairs at the then Commission for Racial Equality. Seconded as Private Secretary and Adviser to the Chair of the new Equality and Human Rights Commission during merger and start up, Emily later became Policy Manager for Local Government, influencing the Speaker's Conference, legislative reform and practice and advocating peaceful solutions in the Dale Farm dispute.
With a Rajiv Gandhi Foundation scholarship, Emily taught classes of up to 80 girls in rural South India, trained teachers in the use of materials developed, learned some Tamil and to cycle in a sari. Educated in inner city Bristol, and at Ruskin College Oxford, Emily went on to read Politics and Philosophy at the University of Hull, where she was elected Vice President (Education & Representation). Thanks to a Morrell Trust Studentship, her MA at the University of York was in The Idea of Toleration with a thesis on Britishness in the 21st Century, inspired by her own hybrid heritage. Emily enjoys yoga, plays guitar, loves Cyprus, music, theatre, arts/crafts and making a difference.
