Update Summer 2014
How has this quarter been for you?
It’s been a productive quarter. I’ve made in-roads for my research and secondment, and undertaken some great (and some not so great) training too. I feel as though I’m getting into the swing of managing my Clore Social time and my regular time. I have made some key decisions (with the help of coach Jeremy Keeley) to keep things on an even keel. I really valued my Action Learning Set, and the June residential gave me a lot of learning opportunities, as well as reconnecting with other Fellows.
How has your leadership had an impact on those you work with?
In a less-than-perfect time for one project, I applied some strategic techniques to get the whole team on board and aligned with the project mission. I got some great feedback from team members about the process. We all had clarity around what we needed to do and when.
In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?
I’m gaining confidence as a leader. I’m setting up better structures and practices to keep the team engaged. And although I have always been able to nail a strong long-term vision, I’m slowly getting better at providing greater clarity around mid-term objectives, goals, and following through.
What important lessons have you learnt so far during the Fellowship?
I have learnt that when I’m not the right person to lead a project, to say so, and to have a plan in place to find a new person. Don’t waver. Futhermore, when I make mistakes or don’t handle things brilliantly, I have learnt to allow opportunities to express emotions rather than over-professionalise: it is not authentic otherwise.
What have you learnt from your fellow Fellows?
Louise Cannon shared with me an opportunity to design and run a leadership development residential programme for 16–21 year olds on the LIVE UnLtd programme. Spark+Mettle won the tender, and we are running a pilot this August, for 12 young people.
How would you describe your Fellowship experience so far?
It’s changing the way I think, work and interact. I am relishing every moment.
