Jacky Bourke-White is Chief Executive Officer at Age UK Lewisham and Southwark, in London.
Jacky spent her childhood in foster care and children’s homes, and it took her a few years to find her feet as an adult. She became a single parent at the age of 25, and becoming a mother gave her the courage to start the process of building a career.
She had left school with very few qualifications, and so restarted her education, taking an access course and then completing a degree. Understanding that it was knowledge of, and access to, housing, welfare benefits, education and child care that had enabled her to move her life forward, she wanted to help others with these challenging areas. After completing her degree she became an advice worker.
Jacky has always sought to make a difference to people’s lives, and has been lucky enough to have had opportunities to work to mitigate the effects of multiple disadvantage and discrimination, moving from frontline work, to service delivery and then senior management within the voluntary sector.
