Update December 2012

The last few months have been hectic, but extremely enjoyable. I launched by research report – ‘We are Family: Key Messages for Kinship Caring in Northern Ireland’ in L’Derry on 28 November 2012.  The report was officially launched by the Mayor of Derry and speakers included a representative from the Western Health and Social Care Trust; a young man who was raised and adopted by his grandparents; a local councillor; three kinship carers and Siobhan Edwards from CSLP.  I loved every minute of it and I know my research will make contribute significantly to the debate on kinship care in Northern Ireland.

I also had the opportunity to meet and present on the issue of kinship care to 2012 Fellows in Edinburgh. I was delighted to see so much support for the issue.

My mentoring sessions have ended, but I am continuing to work with Paul McMinn which is great. My coach, John Donaghy is also continuing to support me. I have my Fellowship to thank for that.

I attended a one day training workshop on Campaigning and Communication.  I am in the process of developing a Campaigning Strategy for Kinship Care NI which will enable me to continue lobbying politicians and policy makers to ensure kinship carers and their children have access to the help and support they need, as and when they need it. I plan to kick off my campaigning by walking from Derry to Stormont (80 miles) in April 2013 in support of kinship care.

My Fellowship is over and I have many people to thank. Rob, John, Tom and Suzie at the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, all the folks, especially Maureen at the Poverty Truth Commission and the many people I have met over the last two years.  I would especially like to thank the CSLP team and my Fellow Fellows for all their support for making my Fellowship a fantastic one.
