Type of Fellowship: General
Year of Fellowship: 2011
Update April 2012
The past few months have been a time of drawing together learning from my year as a Clore Social Fellow. I can truly say that I know myself much better and will continue to be myself and look after myself. I am more comfortable articulating who I am, I appreciate my own strengths, I understand what motivates me, and I am getting a clearer picture of where and how I want to work in the future. This learning has come through every part of my Clore journey, but solidified through my work with the creative coach Bev Morton, my mentor, and working as a MBTI (Myers Briggs) practitioner. My research into what students’ unions contribute to the voluntary Sector has given me the opportunity to look at students’ unions afresh, appreciate their strengths and realise what core elements are important to me in my next leadership role.
My eight month secondment at Scope is coming to an end. I have learned an immense amount about working in a large national charity, managing large scale change, about the disability field and social care. I have enjoyed being part of the Scope team and I’ve built an impressive network of support and contacts (and friendships) that I can take with me. This extended secondment at Scope has allowed me to recognise that my motivations have actually remained consistent – to work with young people, to work in a person centred way, the importance of genuine user involvement, and the transformational power of learning and development. I want to apply my own skills to support people who might be disadvantaged, at risk, or more vulnerable and may need additional opportunities to create an equal playing field in society. This is invaluable knowledge for the next part of my leadership journey.
I am half way through work on my research. I have completed all of my face to face interviews and I am receiving advice from nfpSynergy and other Clore Social Fellows on analysis and write-up. I am looking forward to giving the research full attention once my secondment has finished at the end of March.
