Type of Fellowship: General
Year of Fellowship: 2012
Update October 2012
Blink and you miss it! That is the way I feel about how quickly the Fellowship is going at the moment. With the 2013 Fellows just about to start their journey, it reminds me that my own journey is well underway.
The past quarter has had a focus on how I change my attitudes, behaviours and actions in order to find a workable level of life balance. Through intensive and challenging Action Learning sets, coaching and training I am ready to take the plunge and try out a new me, a healthier and refreshed leader with a good life balance, a sense of proportion and more resilience. If I can’t do it with all the support I currently have, I don’t know if I ever will!
The most exciting news this quarter is that I have just started my three month secondment with Procter & Gamble, working as part of their newly formed Global Process and Transformation Team. I only started recently, so it is still early days, but I believe this will be an amazing opportunity and a huge challenge. I am learning a great deal from seeing leadership through such different lenses. I feel privileged that Procter & Gamble have been willing to let me be part of this high level project team, enabling me to develop personally whilst hopefully adding value.
Working with my mentor, I have begun to explore networking and increasing the knowledge and skills I need to have more impact. It is so helpful to work with someone who has been there, done it and got the T-shirt. She is able to give me such a different perspective and insights and is able to dispel some of the unhelpful myths which create barriers.
I am definitely gaining in confidence and am finding it easier to approach people to ask for their input, thoughts, knowledge and support. I still find myself apologising for asking them to give up their time when I do, so I know that I still have a way to go!
The mini residential was a great opportunity to catch up with the Fellows and I was pleased that I managed to create an informal space to have some self-directed discussions and explore some of the ‘nitty gritty’ issues of our leadership. I would like to do more of this and will endeavour to spend more time with the Fellows outside of the organised format of the programme. We could be great assets to each other going forward if we only build our relationships and networks during the Fellowship.
I have not yet found my feet with regards to the action research project, but am starting to narrow it down. I intend to put quite a bit of time into this over the next quarter so should be on track by the end of the calendar year.
