Update April 2011

The last few months have flown by. We’ve completed a 360° assessment, leadership residential and action learning sets. I’ve also made a start on my coaching, which has been invaluable. It’s amazing what you know already, but convince yourself that you don’t!

I’ve learned from all of the seminars and workshops that I have booked to attend as a Fellow, but the one that really got me thinking was a workshop on Pro-ACTION. The concept of action out of choosing and ‘response-ability’ chimes with my sense of working; firstly, because of the language and narrative of the framework, and secondly because of the never-ending cycle of growth and learning that it implies. I have been using this as a secondary framework to the Clore Social Leadership Programme’s “Know Yourself, Be Yourself, Look after Yourself”.

I’ve always been someone who burns the candle at both ends and works seven days a week; in part because I felt like I’d miss out if I didn’t, but largely because it became a habit. I think I got to a point where I didn’t know what I was looking for in terms of my career, and there wasn’t much connection between the large number of projects I was working on or developing. I’ve now got to stage where I have become more comfortable saying ‘no’ and doing less, and with taking the view that doing nothing is sometimes the best response. I’m still pro-active, but the driver is no longer panic that I might miss something; it’s more about doing things I enjoy or will learn from.

From April onwards, I’ll be starting four courses and doing background research for my documentary on 21stCentury Social Movements.

My quote for the Fellowship so far: “Don't underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can't hear, and not bothering.” Winnie the Pooh
