Update September 2011

The last few months have flown by like somewhat of a whirlwind. Even though the programme ends shortly for full-time Fellows, I feel like I’m just getting into my flow.  I’ve loved every minute of getting into that flow but it’s a reminder that I still have a lot to get done. Knowing Myself, Being Myself and Looking After Myself is great but I now need to change gears to get my research done, enrol at Goldsmiths and my last few meetings with leaders need to be confirmed. I need to ‘Action Myself’.

Out of the four ‘components’ of the Clore Social Leadership Fellowship everything has gone well except training. I have struggled to find the right training package, 9 months in and I’ve settled on the MA/PGDip in Social Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths.

Coaching has been a great source of reflection and self-evaluation, something that is deeply needed on a programme like this because you can, in some cases ‘un-think’ and ‘un-believe’ everything you thought you did when you started. For me personally, I always had the drive and what I thought was ‘purpose’ to Save the World but through coaching I’ve realised that I need to Save Me Too. So, daily, sometimes weekly I have SMT (saving me time), which is space to stop and think about what I need to get done that week, what’s a priority, and most importantly what is a distraction.

I have also completed my secondment at the Guardian Public Leaders Network. It was a very good lesson in how a large organisation operates, something I had on my leadership development plan to achieve. I had the opportunity to commission content about topics I believe are important to the sector such as Innovation, Social Enterprise and Wellbeing (namely Joy in the workplace). I chose to complete a secondment at a media organisation because I wanted to use my journalism training in a way that worked with my social/third sector experience and I think I achieved this. I have thought however that I am lacking large charity experience so who knows I may schedule a mini secondment before the end of the year.

Quotes for the Fellowship thus far:

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.  James Baldwin
