What is the greatest challenge you faced so far in your Fellowship?
As a part-time Fellow I am finding balancing my busy and demanding day job with the Fellowship a real challenge. To manage this I am trying to spend one day a week out of the office to concentrate on Clore, but this is sometimes easier said than done when leading a small charity!
Have you noticed your leadership having an impact on those you work with?
I have noticed that I am taking what I am learning through the Fellowship and beginning to apply it within my workplace. The Governance session at the January residential was incredibly useful, and prompted me to suggest an externally facilitated ‘away day’ for the Board of Trustees of Safe & Sound Derby to review the role of the Board, as new members had recently joined. There was positive feedback from all those taking part and the outcome has been a strengthening of the governance structures within the charity.
In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?
Over the past three months, I have been working on looking after myself to ensure a better life balance. I am someone who often takes work home with them, and has a tendency to say ‘yes’ when asked to support. As part of this, earlier in the year, I took the difficult decision to resign from my position as a trustee with Base 51, an organisation I had been involved with for over four years. This has freed up time for the Fellowship, my work, and for myself.
What have you learnt from your fellow Fellows so far?
Lots! My Action Learning Set has been especially helpful. The open, supportive and challenging questioning by four Fellows when I presented an issue really made me think, and enabled me to look at the issue from different perspectives. And I’m planning to visit a couple of organisations that other Fellows are leading in the next few months to share learning and experiences.
