What impact has your leadership had on your organisation in the last few months, Omar?

Runnymede is launching a campaign called ‘Ending Racism This Generation’. We have hired 3 new staff to work on this project, and I have supported their work and suggested key statistics we need to highlight, key contacts we need to engage, and possible communications for a wider audience.

In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?

I am now more conscious of the fact that I have skills and experience that I can use to help support others. I am now clearer about how to ensure staff I line manage get support, but also how to support them in planning and achieving development goals. I have always been collegiate and committed to working with others, but I am now more cognisant of the need to do so with clear structures, and that I have particular skills and experience to share with others.

What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned recently?

Connections or networking lead to unexpected opportunities. Conversely, that promising opportunities sometimes do not develop.

What about something you’ve learned from another Fellow

Sometimes you have to make tough decisions and you cannot always do so without affecting others.

How would you sum up the Fellowship experience so far?

A fantastic opportunity both to gain important skills and experiences, and to reflect and develop a sense of leadership. In terms of Runnymede, my Fellowship has also provided a small organisation with a significant increase in support.
