Update April 2011
I left my role with Gloucestershire county council at the end of February, so my journey with Clore is still at an early stage. The last month has given me a chance to reflect and regroup after a challenging year in work. The first element of the Fellowship was the 360° review. In many ways, I was anxious about receiving feedback through this, as I was taking some of the respondents through redundancy procedures at the time. However, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, giving me some reassurance that I had handled the situation sensitively!
The time spent at the residential training week was an essential part of the programme as it provided an opportunity to build networks with Fellows, the Clore Social Leadership staff team, and the guest speakers who were of an exceptional quality. I believe this process of building connections amongst Fellows and the prgramme’s associates will have a fundamental impact on my personal success.
During the last two months, I have identified and contracted a coach to support me through my Fellowship. I have also started discussions with NESTA (the funder of my Fellowship) about my secondment, research and other opportunities.
For my research, I am interested in the extent to which financial investment is required to make ‘Big Society’ happen. This is likely to focus on a localised case study of a new housing development, where the residents are attempting to take a leading role in developing the estate as a community.
Since starting Clore I have attended a number of workshops and events on a wide range of subjects including social impact bonds, ‘whole education’, and negotiation.
At the end of the initial phase of the Fellowship, I am learning to appreciate that my skills base is quite diverse, and I am developing a better understanding of where I have more potential.
