Type of Fellowship: General
Year of Fellowship: 2013
How has your Fellowship journey been recently?
One of my biggest recent achievements was securing a secondment with the Soil Association, which began on the 1st October. I continue to have regular sessions with my coach and action learning set, both of which have been incredibly useful. I have also participated in training on networking and presentation skills, and the final Clore Social residential.
How has your leadership had an impact on those around you?
As a result of the assessment process and ongoing input on issues such as leadership style, I have overhauled our staff appraisal system to provide a much more rounded picture of how they are doing, whether they have the right skills, knowledge and support (the previous system focused heavily on whether or not targets were being met).
In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?
I am already much more confident and willing to take risks. An example of this is in my delivery of a new project for the organisation, where I have found it much easier to network and draw other organisations (and therefore additional resources) into the project, which will increase its impact.
Tell us an important lesson you’ve learnt so far during the Fellowship programme
I learned a lot from the process of looking for a secondment (that the possibilities were much greater than I had thought, that people were really keen for me to work with them) and was able to build contacts, some of which will be really useful to my work. My only regret is not having this confidence earlier - might I have aimed higher, or broader?
How have you been helped by other Fellows
I've been asking a number of fellows for support with networking, which is my Achilles heel!
How would you sum up the Clore Social experience so far?
As a result of the Fellowship the world of work has become both the place where I campaign for things to get better, and a place to play and enjoy being.
