How have the last few months been, Samir?

I’ve made a lot of progress. It took me the first quarter of the year to fully comprehend what the Fellowship was about, what opportunities were available and to do some reflecting, whereas this second quarter has been about putting ideas into action. I have confirmed Jeremy Keeley as my coach and I think I have (finally) identified a mentor. Both residentials were extremely eye-opening (or should that be mindopening?). Last month’s  future forecasting session exercised my brain in a way I've not been accustomed to before. The time away for self reflection has felt like a luxury. And I am starting to book in training now which is incredibly exciting.

What has been your greatest challenge?

As expected, it has been finding time away from work but I am gradually making space and learning to say 'no'.

How has your leadership been having an impact on those you work with?

I have started to notice how colleagues work and respond in different ways and am learning to take a different approach to those relationships. Double loop learning is a key tool that I have learned in this respect, so I’m noticing my reactions more.

In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?

Jeremy’s suggestion that anxiety can be a good thing if used well - embracing it as a piece of information caused by change - is a new approach for me and it’s helping me deal with stress. I also feel that the time for self-reflection has helped me be a calmer person.

Tell us about an important lesson you’ve learnt so far.

The mantra that I take with me at all times is 'confidence with humility' which I took from Dame Mary. It is something I aspire to always adhere to.

What have you learned from your fellow Fellows?

I can't really pin it down to a lesson but I have simply just enjoyed being in their company and listening to their take on things. I have learned a lot from listening to Fellows who are parents and how they combine this with careers.
