Type of Fellowship: Specialist
Year of Fellowship: 2015
Maggie's Fellow (Maggie's Centres)
How have the first few months of your Fellowship been, Sarah?
Enlightening! I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the 2015 Fellows. The residential in Poole was inspiring; meeting and hearing from such a broad range of skilled and experienced people. Becoming part of the Action Learning set, thinking and behaving so purposefully within that environment has been such a positive experience. I’m really enjoying learning whilst in employment (as opposed to being a full time student) and being able to implement new tools and techniques immediately.
What has been your greatest challenge?
The greatest challenge has been being able to carve out sufficient time within my current job and workload, to make space for Clore Social 'thinking'. It's less of a challenge creating time to be at planned events, but taking time to reflect, think and plan for the opportunities that lie ahead has been more difficult.
In what way you are a better leader now than at the start of the Fellowship?
In the short time since I have become a Clore Fellow, I have tried to implement some of the fascinating concepts and new ways of thinking that we learnt at the Residential in January. Being mindful of the values and personality of others (from the Four Seasons), the power of storytelling and being bold about or ‘owing’ my weakness, are all hugely valuable tools that I have been able to implement over the last couple of months.
Tell us about an important lesson you’ve learnt so far during the Fellowship programme
One of my most memorable and poignant lessons from our first residential was ‘to make small things beautiful’. Taking the time to make even the smallest of interactions such as conversations, gestures, meetings or written text as perfect as possible, can make an enormous impact, often creating a much more favourable outcome. Being conscious of doing ‘small things beautifully’ is a great discipline to apply to everyday activity.
So how would you sum it all up so far?
Clore Social enables you think, learn and behave differently; providing the tools, time and environment to test your abilities, be honest about your own skills and values and ….grow!
