Type of Fellowship: General
Year of Fellowship: 2012
Update October 2012
If I thought the months were flying by in my last update, they certainly are now. Every week of my Fellowship is still bringing new experiences (even if it’s when I’m on holiday) which are all contributing to my leadership journey. The highlight of the last quarter was a Disney Institute Masterclass in Leadership and Business Excellence. As well as being great fun and with a really diverse audience, the session explored and explained Disney’s approach to creating a company culture: a very deliberate strategy with stringent attention to detail across all business areas in order to always ‘exceed expectations’.
I have also taken part in an ACOSVO leadership dinner and have spoken to a number of leaders in the third sector in Scotland. I have been really taken aback by the number of CEOs exhausted by the constant struggle to keep their organisations going in tough times. Very few seem to be ‘looking after themselves’.
I found my coaching sessions really useful, not only for exploring the Clore “principles” (‘know yourself, be yourself, look after yourself’) and reflecting on other experiences, but also discussing my research proposal. This has led me to refocus my research on a couple of different potential areas, which I am now exploring further before making a final decision. I have also been having initial conversations with a number of organisations around secondment possibilities. I will be following these up over the autumn period with the view to making a final decision before Christmas.
