Update Spring 2013

Three months into my second year of the fellowship, and the time seems to be flying by even faster.

I have attended a number of events run by different organisations which have looked at individual leadership journeys - none of which were networks I had access to 6 months ago. This included the Thriving Scotland network event featuring Brigadier David Allfrey, who spoke about his transition from the army to being CEO of a small organisation with 7 staff but with big ambitions and obligations, running the annual Edinburgh Tattoo.  The other two events involved leaders with very different backgrounds, Jane Ryder ex CEO of OSCR and Karen Carlton ex Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (titles listed are amongst the many hats both individuals wear)

On two other thought provoking events, I was lucky enough to attend, a Scottish Futures Forum event entitled “Thinking about Society Differently – this included Judith Robertson from Oxfam talking about the Humankind index  - and a CIPR event looking at the day in the life of the Scottish Government's Communications team – this had two particularly interesting bits, one on ranking of societal risks in relation to resilience planning and the thinking behind some recent examples of the social change work the government has undertaken.

In March I travelled to Newcastle to meet other fellows from my Action Learning Set.  This was our first non-compulsory Action Learning Set we self-facilitated.  It felt like a bit of a milestone, being almost 1 year on from our first session together.

In terms of the other formal elements of the programme, I am in detailed discussions with a large Edinburgh based corporate about a potential secondment.  On the research side, I have undertaken an event to collect data for my research project which is looking at the future of volunteering in Scotland.

I also participated in the Clore Social recruitment event for the 2014 fellows  in Edinburgh, which was a great chance for reflection.
