Last week we celebrated with our Clore6 Fellows who have just completed our first-ever Clore6: Youth Sector Leadership Programme. A special event was held for them at the Paul Hamlyn Foundation where the 22 emerging leaders from 22 youth sector organisations were commended for their achievements. They are now all official Clore Social Fellows joining our growing network of 170 social leaders.
A key component of this six-month programme was the applied leadership challenge. At their first residential the participants were charged with developing applied solutions to answer real-life sector challenges. Working as teams, the Fellows presented their ideas at the celebration event which focused on the below themes:
- Narrative - Developing a unified narrative for the youth sector
- Governance - Specific to the youth sector, though applicable beyond
- People Development - This group developed a learning resource concept for new managers
Collaboration is at the heart of this programme having been born from a group of youth sector CEOs who came together and identified a leadership need in their sector. To ensure the future of their organisations, beneficiaries and the wider community, they wanted to develop a leadership pipeline, and we worked in partnership with them to develop Clore6.
One of these organisations was Step Up to Serve whose CEO, Charlotte Hill, delivered a speech at the event alongside our Trustee Caroline Ellis. Earlier in the year, Charlotte wrote about the development of Fiona Ellison, her Programme Manager and a Clore6 participant, saying she was impressed by her growth. ‘[Clore6] has been a fantastic investment, and a really collaborative way for a group of organisations to invest in their people - I am seeing Fiona blossom.’ Read more here.
Louise Drake, our Director of Programmes and Leadership Innovations said, ‘Learning about leadership is the easy bit, actually deploying leadership on complex and challenging tasks is what social leaders are expected to do every day. Our Fellows worked together to identify the root of the challenges they were set, and they then produced concepts, recommendations and reports for the benefit of the wider youth sector. The resilience and generosity displayed by these Fellows, and their passion for the sector has been inspiring. We look forward to working with them to further disseminate their work, and we will build on it with future cohorts’.
This pilot programme has been such a success that we are opening it up to all emerging leaders in the wider sector. We are taking expressions of interest for our next Clore6 Open programme, aimed across the social sector for social and ethical leaders,starting in October 2017.
