We are delighted to announce a new leadership development programme called the Hull Social Leadership Programme, aimed at social and cultural leaders in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire, starting in 2018.
Developed with the support of the Big Lottery Fund, The Rank Foundation and Arts Council England, the programme will build on the success of the Hull Community Development Project and Hull’s status as the UK City of Culture in 2017. It will develop a pipeline of leaders who will maximise these and other local opportunities. For updates and announcements about the Hull programme, join the mailing list.
A steering group of sector leaders and stakeholders in Hull and East Riding will provide oversight for the design and execution of this unique ‘place-based’ leadership programme. This approach means that the programme is wholly focused on understanding and working with the community-wide needs of Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire’s social and cultural organisations, and the people they serve. To lead the delivery of the year-long programme, we are currently recruiting a locally based Programme Manager.
The programme will bring together people from charities, social enterprises, community businesses and arts organisations in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire to develop a cadre of regional leaders. It is aimed at established, emerging and new leaders as well as trustees and will emphasise ethical and social values and the resilience, agility, foresight and generosity that we, alongside our regional partners, believe leaders need to thrive in a rapidly changing environment.

Jan Garrill, Chief Executive of Two Ridings Community Foundation welcomed the programme, ‘This initiative will transform the voluntary sector in Hull and East Riding by building on the recent community projects in the area, including the UK City of Culture, to provide much needed leadership development in the voluntary sector in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire. It’s the first time a leadership programme has been piloted in this place-based manner, and we hope that this innovative approach will be adapted by other cities or regions across the country in the years to come.’
In the autumn, and in collaboration with our local partners, we will conduct a detailed assessment of the current capabilities and needs of leaders in Hull and East Riding. This analysis will be led by the soon to be recruited Programme Manager, and it will feed into the design of the programme as part of the place-based approach.
